Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly made a decision on the long-term future of one their most promising young talents.

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly made a decision on the long-term future of one their most promising young talents.

Chiefs are thought to be on the verge of tying down young midfielder Samkelo Zwane to a new long-term deal if the latest news are anything to go by.

Zwane had been making waves week in, week out for the Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge side, where had become a key cog of their midfield. Those impressive performances resulted in some widespread calls for the player to involved in Arthur Zwane’s first team squad. Before the end of 2022, he found himself in that squad and making his first team debut.

Chiefs were then dealt a huge mid-season blow after they lost another academy product in Njabulo Blom to St. Louis City of the MLS. That then necessitated an extra midfield body, which would then see the Amakhosi faithful finally get their wish of seeing the 21-year-old becoming a regular member of the first team starting line-up. Zwane had a mix bag of performances, some seeing him being replaced for more experienced players and others showing his enormous potential through man of the match performances.

That, however, is exactly what one would expect from a young player finding his feet at first team level. Through that initial integration process, it seems as if the Chiefs management have seen enough in Zwane to suggest that the club would benefited a great deal in keeping him for the long-term. 

Zwane set for Chiefs extension

“When he got promoted, he didn’t change his contract terms from the junior contract to senior team. But now that the team want him to be full-time senior player, he is supposed to sign a new contract which is expected to run from 1st July 2023 until June 2027. It’s supposed to be a four-year deal if they agree. The technical team is happy with what they have seen since he started featuring. It’s not a done deal yet, but for now we can say it is about 80% done” a source said according to Soccer-Laduma

Chiefs are believed to be looking to offload midfielders Cole Alexander as well as George Matlou, who Zwane is already ahead of, in the pecking order. If these reports prove to be true, they can only further boost the SA U-23 international’s confidence.
