Kaizer Chiefs: Pule Mmodi the smokescreen for mystery marquee man?

Has the Kaizer Chiefs “pursuit” of Pule Mmodi been a smokescreen for bigger and better things all along? It’s an intriguing possibility.

It’s difficult to separate the fact from the fiction during a transfer window. Everyone believed that Kaizer Chiefs were after Pule Mmodi but, for now, those reports seem to have been wholly inaccurate.

Kaizer Chiefs “pursuit” of Mmodi could be a smokescreen

If we’re being totally honest, would Amakhosi fans be happy if Pule Mmodi turned out to be their only marquee signing of the January window? Probably not. The Mmodi to Chiefs story has flip-flopped this way and that for weeks, with the latest reports claiming Chiefs never even wanted him in the first place.

Or, to be more specific, they were offered the chance to sign the Golden Arrows man but politely declined. Will he end up at Orlando Pirates? That seems the likeliest outcome as things stand. Could the Mmodo links to Amakhosi have been planted by agents to create a smokescreen so that Chiefs can get their business done stealthily in the background? You can’t rule it out.

So, who are Chiefs actually going to sign?

Every man and his dog knows about the trial system being used at Naturena. It has the potential to unearth a few hidden gems from across the continent, so perhaps Chiefs’ new “marquee” signing won’t be a household name at all.

They won’t be too bothered though if that player fits into the club ethos and puts the ball in the back of the net. Successful trialist Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana hasn’t done too badly so far. Also, we can’t rule out the possibility of the Glamour Boys pulling a rabbit out the hat and signing an established PSL name. Time will tell.
