The official Kaizer Chiefs account on X has seemingly posted a goodbye video to departing skipper Itumeleng Khune.

Khune is leaving Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are currently playing their penultimate match of the season, locked at 0-0 against Polokwane City. The Amakhosi account on X posted a video tribute to Khune, presumably because this is their last home match of the campaign and the legendary ‘keeper will be leaving the club. However, Bruce Bvuma got the nod between the sticks for this clash. Chiefs have their first-choice central defensive pairing of Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe together again but there’s no guarantee they’ll finish inside the top eight. It might boil down to this result.

A club legend departs

After almost two decades at the club, Itumeleng Khune’s Kaizer Chiefs story finally ends in 2024. Itumeleng Issac Khune was the rare honour of being a one-club man. Famous around the world for his sensational distribution of a football, he’s also displayed superb shot-stopping abilities for club and country down the years. Khune made his PSL debut for Amakhosi against Jomo Cosmos in August 2007. In the 16 years that have elapsed, he has scooped seven major honours with the Glamour Boys, including three DStv Premiership crowns in 2005, 2013 and 2015. This guy was also PSL Footballer of the Year in 2013. Say what you will, but Khune is a bona fide Amakhosi legend. The likes of Spiwe Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe are options to take the armband from Khune. Meanwhile, senior stars like Keagan Dolly and Edmilson Dove also face uncertain futures.

Stats of a great

Aside from his impressive trophy haul, you can’t argue with Khune’s appearance tally at Chiefs. He has made 347 appearances for the Glamour Boys to go with 91 Bafana Bafana caps. When will Chiefs have a player again who matches those numbers? No matter what happened in the latter stages of his Chiefs career, nobody can take these accolades away from the 36-year-old.

Does Khune deserve a more respectful sendoff? What are your best memories of the man?
