Itumeleng Khune’s contract is about to expire and recent events have indicated that he could leave Kaizer Chiefs. Ironically, to join their PSL rivals.

Amakhosi legend, Itumeleng Khune faces an uncertain future at Kaizer Chiefs.

In fact, his contract is set to expire. Meanwhile, the latest reports coming out of Naturena, indicate that he will not earn a contract extension. At least, not as a player. However, this could lead Khune to join their PSL rivals.

CHIEFS LEGEND KHUNE STILL WANTS TO PLAY

Khune still wants to play, according to reports on SoccerLaduma. Whilst, the club wants him to hang up his boots (and gloves) to take up a different role at the club. Therefore, Khune has a big choice to make. Either, continue playing – at a different club or to stay at Chiefs but in a different role. Let’s look at the options on Khune’s table.

PSL rivals are interested in signing Khune. Furthermore, his agent has confirmed that he still wants to play (which Khune publicly stated at the clubs 25 year anniversary celebration too). So, he can either join one of these clubs or retire and take up another role at Chiefs.

If he opts for the latter, then he will become a goalkeeper coach or Chiefs ambassador. Finally, with Amakhosi management aware of his desire to still play they could change their minds. However, the latter option is unlikely. This is because Chiefs are in the market for a new keeper and they have repeated their stance on not extending his contract.

AMAKHOSI LINE UP GOALKEEPER TARGETS

Stanley Nwabili is Chiefs’ main goalkeeper target. Interestingly, a swop deal could see Amakhosi lose a key player to lure Nwabili to Naturena.

Meanwhile, they have also expressed interest in an Afcon-winning goalkeeper previously coached by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. However, they face stiff competition from Orlando Pirates.

Ultimately, the ball is in Khune’s court. Although, the new coach could influence the final say on Khune’s Chiefs playing career. Regardless, Khune wants to play. So, it is now a case of a contract extension (which is unlikely) or joining another club. So, don’t be suprised to see Khune playing for another side in the PSL next season.
