Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has hinted at a first-team debut for 19-year-old Njabulo Blom, as the club prepares for the big clash against Supersport United on Friday night.

The German has shown faith in the club’s youth products since taking over for his second stint at the helm of the Soweto giants in December 2018.

He recently promoted the teenager to the first-team, following a good showing for South Africa’s Under-20 national team in the recently-concluded African youth championship, where they secured qualification for the Under-20 World Cup taking place in Poland later in the year.

Ahead of the trip to Nelspruit, Middendorp revealed that Blom was part of the travelling squad and could be due a debut in the not-so-distant future.

“Njabulo Blom has been included in the travelling squad‚” Middendorp is quoted on the club website.

“I’ve noticed a positive change in his game and persona‚ which is good. He’s showing signs of being ready to make his first-team debut.”

Blom is the latest in a string of Kaizer Chiefs youngsters who have been entrusted with a step up to the main squad.

He joined a list which includes exciting left-back Happy Mashiane, who has started regularly, as well as 16-year-old goalkeeper Karabo Molefe, who is yet to make his first-team debut.

Mashiane will, however, not take part in the clash against Supersport United as he is one of the latest players to join the club’s lengthy injury list, which includes Bafana defender Eric Mathoho who – according to the coach – is on the mend.

“We will probably have a few of the guys back before the end of the season. Mulomowandau (Eric) Mathoho is back on the training pitch, although he will only start doing full training in about four weeks.”

Kick-off against Supersport United is at 20:00 (SAST).
