For Kaizer Chiefs to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, more depth is needed to avoid placing players out of position as well as to create high competition.

Amakhosi have shown glimpses of really high-quality football with two wins from four games – but one too many players have been played out of position.

THREE REASONS KAIZER CHIEFS NEED MORE DEPTH

Here are three reasons Amakhosi still need a few more players.

1. Left-back

  • Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya and Sibusiso Mabiliso have left.
  • Happy Mashiane, who has not confirmed if he is a defender, midfielder, or winger, is linked with a loan move.
  • Sifiso Hlanti remains unfit since last season.
  • Edmilson Dove has been signed to play in central defence.
  • Reeve Frosler is played out of position as the makeshift left-back.

2. Number six

  • The club’s marquee signing – Yusuf Maart – has shown all the qualities to be the club’s number six. But what happens if he gets injured, loses form, or gets a red card as he did last Saturday night?
  • Siyethemba Sithebe can play as a 6 but does he have the all-action skillset needed for the role at a team like Amakhosi?
  • Alexander Cole has the dynamism to play as a 6 but he is short of confidence and fans are on his back.

3. Center forward

  • Ashley Du Preez is injured for at least a month.
  • Khama Billiat is unable to play as a nine against teams that defend deep against Amakhosi.
  • The new signing – Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana – has the perfect physical attributes. But what if he fails to adapt to the PSL, or gets injured? Who will compete with him?

CONCLUSION

Coach Arthur Zwane seemingly needs to create cover and depth in the left-back, number six, and the center-forward position.

The options are adding more signings before the window closes or promoting from the academy.
