Kaizer Chiefs have blown hot and cold, that’s what you expect from a team renovation.

We’ve all learned that it takes an average of three transfer windows to develop a team, here’s a look at the signings coach Arthur Zwane has to make in the January transfer window or going into June 2023.

KAIZER CHIEFS MAKE 10 SIGNINGS

Having won six games, lost four, and drawn three, including one victory in the MTN8 quarter-finals, Kaizer Chiefs have done fairly ok to sit in fourth place with seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Much of the encouraging signs on the pitch came from the new faces. Here’s a quick retake at the business that was done in the June transfer window:

  1. Siyethemba Sithebe – central midfielder
  2. Zitha Kwinika – Central defender
  3. Ashely du Preez – Forward
  4. Dillan Solomons – Right back
  5. Geroge Matlou – Central midfielder
  6. Kamohelo Mahlatsi – Attacking midfielder
  7. Yusuf Maart – Central midfielder
  8. Mduduzi Shabalala – Attacking midfielder
  9. Edmilson Dove – Central defender
  10. Caleb-Bonfils Bimenyimana – Center forward.

Having seen each and every player in action since August, only Kwinika, Solomons and Maart have delivered a telling contribution on the grass. Others have shown glimpses but are yet to provide any consistency.

FIVE POSITIONS ARTHUR ZWANE NEEDS TO BEEF UP IN JANUARY

Here is a list created in order of priority.

  1. Center forward – This weakness has been quite obvious to everyone. Caleb came in as somewhat of a panic transfer in September. Khama Billiat and Ashley du Preez are not traditional center forwards, at least not in Zwane’s system. Additionally, Caleb has already struggled with fitness. A club of Chiefs’ ambitions can never rely on one striker, or not even two.
  2. Right-wing – Zwane has said it publicly, Amakhosi enjoy attacking currency from Kgaogelo Sekgota on the left, despite his frustrating flaws, but the team has little to nothing coming from the right side.
  3. Defensive midfield – There’s no question, Njabulo Blom is the class act for that role, but what happens when he loses form or fitness? The likes of Phathutshedzo Nange and Cole Alexander are yet to convince and look to be on the way out of Chiefs.
  4. Central midfield – This is a major position for any ball-dominant team. Having Maart is the reliable option screams a lack of depth. He will sooner or later lose form or fitness. George Matlou is not enough cover.
  5. Attacking midfield / number 10: This position has seen Zwane move Keagan Dolly from the wing to be used as an unplanned solution. Why? Kamohelo Mahlatsi has suffered an injury spell as well as what seems to be stage fright. Additionally, Khama Billiat and du Preez have failed to form combinations with the rest of the attacking line.

Meanwhile, Chiefs have welcomed two trialists. Bradley Cross and Balint Bajner. Additionally, the club is linked with Pule Mmodi.

In the meantime, all attention has switched to the FIFA World Cup.
