There’s a pattern of consistency. The decision to give youngsters a chance fully took flight in 2019 while former coach Ernst Middendorp was at the club.

Amakhosi fans celebrated in high excitement as Happy Mashiane was announced as a first-team footballer. Middendorp described him as ‘very calm.’

Soon after we met the likes of Keletso Sifama, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Njabulo Blom, and Sabelo Radebe while the likes of Darrel Macheke and Lebohang Letsoako got a run in the CAF Champions League under Gavin Hunt.

Just a brief intro if you’ve never heard of Omega Mdaka. He is a rather superb 19-year-old left-back who was an unsung hero as the U19s won the 2022 DStv Diski Shield (DDS) title in July.

He is as technical as you’d expect from a Glamour Boy with enough physical strength, think a new Tsepo Masilela.

So why do we believe his time is near?

Here are five reasons:

  1. Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya was the first left-back departure last month, he has since joined Sekhukhune United.
  2. The 23-year-old Sibusiso Mabiliso followed in Ntiya-Ntiya’s footsteps after a mutual agreement. He failed to convince Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter, and Arthur Zwane.
  3. Sifiso Hlanti, 32, is still unfit since early last season.
  4. The club’s new left-footed defender, Edmilson Dove, has been signed to play as a central defender, not as a number three as some people have claimed.
  5. The superbly technical and intelligent Happy Mashiane, 24, is linked with a loan move to Swallows where he will earn enough game time to confirm if he is a full-back, midfielder, or a winger.
