How Kaizer Chiefs can reduce Sundowns’ points before playing them

It’s not over yet. Kaizer Chiefs are well aware there’s still a chance to catch Mamelodi Sundonws in the PSL chase.

Imagine the drama. Kaizer Chiefs could still catch and even surpass Mamelodi Sundowns before the DStv Premiership title is over in May. Even if Amakhosi fail to achieve the nearly impossible, we would just love some kind of excitement until the final day.

CHIPPA UNITED 1-3 KAIZER CHIEFS

As The South African reported on Saturday night, Stuart Baxter’s side claimed a superb 3-1 win in Port Elizabeth over the struggling Chippa United, thanks to goals from Samir Nurkovic, Keagan Dolly, and Cole Alexander.

The three-points victory reduced Sundowns’ summit lead to 13 points. However, Kaizer Chiefs currently have two games in hand. Those are the December 2021 canceled games against Golden Arrows and Cape Town City when the Glamour Boys suffered an overwhelming number of COVID-19 cases.

The case ended up going to arbitration where the ruling went in Kaizer Chiefs’ favour to replay the two games.

However, a further twist was in store. The PSL have since decided to review the arbitration ruling. This means that Amakhosi’s two games in hand are no longer guaranteed, but are still expected as it stands.

HOW SUNDOWNS’ LEAD CAN BE CUT SHORTER

Assuming that the arbitration ruling will stand to allow Amakhosi to re-play the games against Golden Arrows and Cape Town City, and Stuart Baxter’s team team go on to win both games, Sundowns’ log lead will be reduced to just seven points. And this is before Amakhosi meet Sundowns on 8 May at the FNB Stadium.

Will the arbitration ruling stand to allow Kaizer Chiefs to replay two games in hand, and later take on Kabo Yellow in May? Only time will tell.
