Kaizer Chiefs: Five most expensive players – and three flopped!

This is rather interesting. We’ve come across the five most expensive players Kaizer Chiefs ever paid for in the PSL.

Kaizer Chiefs continue to be the butt of jokes as the ‘free transfer’ club in the PSL. Passionate Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns fans enjoy calling Amakhosi “Free Agents FC.”

We’ve now had a look at the club’s most expensive transfer payments in record history. In the top five, three never succeeded at Naturena, was it the catalyst for the transfer policy change?

KAIZER CHIEFS’ FIVE MOST EXPENSIVE TRANSFER PAYMENT BUYS

According to the leading player transfer data collectors, Transfermarkt, the former defender Morgan Gould is the most expensive transfer fee in recorded history. It’s pretty surprising but this is what is on record.

In the top five list, only two players became successes while the other three ended up as expensive flops. That’s football.

Here’s the complete list and paid fees as per Transfermarkt:

Morgan Gould

The former central defender was bought from SuperSport United for a reported R9 million when he was 29 in the 2012/13 season.

David Zulu

Signed from Chippa United after a quick-fire goal form. He was signed for R4 million in 2014 when he was 28, the striker had a forgettable short career in Soweto.

Lazarous Kambole

The Zambian forward was signed as recently as the 2019/20 season. So Kaizer Chiefs do still buy players after all. Kambole cost R2.8 million from Zesco United, aged 25. He has not been a success and is expected to depart at the end of this season.

Siphelele Ntshangase

This fellow’s failed Chiefs career was sadly felt. He was the technical and kasi-flavoured attacking midfielder Amakhosi fans always yearn for. He cost a reported R2.7 million from Baroka FC in the 2017/18 season when he was 24.

Tefu Mashamaite

A huge success. The lanky central defender goes down as one of Kaizer Chiefs’ most successful skippers with two PSL titles and the MTN 8. Individually, he took the Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, and Absa Premiership Defender of the Season awards in 2015.

Mashamaite joined from Bidvest Wits in 2011/12 for R2.3 million when he was 26.

So are the three expensive flops of Zulu, Ntshangase, and Kambole the inspiration behind Kaizer Chiefs’ subsequent reluctance to pay huge transfer fees? It’s probably true.
