Kaizer Chiefs: Why these three clubs would afford Itumeleng Khune if he leaves

It’s not unreasonable to think Itumeleng Khune could leave Kaizer Chiefs if he remains benched. So, which PSL teams could sign him and why?

Kaizer Chiefs, like any club in the world, can’t always keep unhappy players, legends or not. This is the exact reason why Itumeleng Khune could leave the club at the end of the season.

DIMINISHED GAME TIME

Firstly, it has been quite apparent that the 34-year-old goalkeeper is itching to get opportunities to play. Khune has gone as far as promoting himself on social media as aggressively as we’ve ever seen him.

The former Bafana Bafana star has only made one appearance in the PSL this season, while Brendon Petersen has deservedly taken the gloves from the likes of Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma.

Additionally, last season saw Khune notching only 18 appearances while he played six times in 2019/20.

The age of 34 is hardly the end of a career for goalkeepers and Khune has suggested on social media that he has a lot to offer Kaizer Chiefs.

He has gone as far as saying he dreams of playing beyond Gianluigi Buffon’s 44 years of age.

ITUMELENG KHUNE’S KAIZER CHIEFS CONTRACT

Should the 34-year-old leave at the end of the season, it will not be as a free agent. Khune’s current contract with Amakhosi only ends in June 2023.

With a year left on his contract when this season ends, the price to buy him from Kaizer Chiefs could be affordable.

Possibilities to get him on a free deal? Khune could ask to terminate his contract and leave on a mutual agreement – especially if another club will be knocking on his door with a decent salary offer and contract.

PSL CLUBS THAT CAN AFFORD ITUMELENG KHUNE’S SALARY

We all know that not many local clubs can afford Khune’s salary. Those that have the money will be aware of the massive marketing potential to sign the Ventersdorp-born star.

The first obvious first possibility is the super-rich Mamelodi Sundowns. Kabo Yellow have a track record of luring Kaizer Chiefs players to Chloorkop with better contracts.

Another club could be Orlando Pirates, but this is a wild card considering how close Amakhosi are to Khune’s heart. Pirates have the money but this is unlikely drama – but you never know what can happen in this game.

The third possibility is John Comitis’ highly-ambitious Cape Town City. If the Citizens could afford Teko Modise’s salary, what would stop them from bringing Khune on board?

Meanwhile, we all keep a close eye on the development of Khune’s career at Kaizer Chiefs.
