When Kaizer Chiefs announced the signing of Serbian Nurkovic, many local soccer fans will have rushed to Google before jumping for joy, but it appears that the Serbian striker has received the warmest welcome from the Amakhosi faithful.

The 27-year-old was the third signing made by the club in the ongoing window, unveiled alongside midfielder Kearyn Baccus who, like him, was completely new to South African football.

Having banged in 23 goals in 25 league games in Slovakia’s second tier, his numbers alone will have inspired hope among the long-suffering Chiefs fans, who are looking for a change in fortunes after four years of slim pickings.

Speaking to the club’s website, Nurkovic recalled the warm welcome he received on arrival.

“I appreciate the warm welcome I received when I arrived at Chiefs. I really like being here and look forward to doing well for the team,” said Nurković.

How Kaizer Chiefs landed Nurkovic

Just as Chiefs fans will not have been familiar with the player, he too did not know much about the club.

Nurkovic revealed that his agent was approached towards the end of the season. Upon being informed of the club’s interest, he did not hesitate in making the decision to switch from Slovakia to South Africa.

“My agent called and said Chiefs was interested in my services.

“He told me one great team in South Africa is interested. I didn’t hesitate to accept the offer.

“I was amazed when I arrived at the Chiefs Village. We have all that is required for professional football. It is amazing. The support we get is another exciting and unbelievable aspect here. “The peace sign fascinates me, and I look forward to contributing in making the supporters happy.”

Nurkovic has already made an impact at his new club, after turning out for them into pre-season friendlies.

He provided the assist for Bernard Parker, who scored Chiefs’ only goal in a 2-1 defeat to Township Rollers in Botswana. He also made a brief appearance in the 2-0 loss to Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup last Saturday.

He is now in line to feature for the team in an official game, as they prepare to square off against Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa on Sunday.

“I want to give my best to help the team, and I’m looking forward to my first official match for Chiefs.”
