Kaizer Chiefs: New captain candidates for next season – full list

Amakhosi management may have to consider a new Kaizer Chiefs captain for next season. Here’s the list of potential candidates.

Current Captain Itumeleng Khune;s future is up in the air with Amakhosi management yet to offer him a contract extension. However, even if they do, he is no longer first-choice with Brandon Peterson preferred in goal.

Therefore, Amakhosi management may need to consider handing the captaincy armband to a regular starter. We take a look at the leading candidates to take over the Amakhosi captaincy next season.

LEADING CANDIDATES FOR THE CHIEFS CAPTAINCY

1) KEAGAN DOLLY (CHIEFS VICE-CAPTAIN)

Dolly is Amakhosi’s current vice-captain. However, he spent large chunks of last season as captain due to Khune being dropped by Arthur Zwane.

Furthermore, he has experience playing for the national team as well as having played in Eurpe for French side Montpiellier. He has also tasted PSL success with Mamelodi Sundowns. He is also a regular starter, making him the first-choice to take over from Khune should he leave or remain the clubs econd-choice goalkeeper.

2) YUSUF MAART

Maart took over the captaincy when Dolly was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Moreover, he is also former Bafana Bafana national and regular starter in the midfield. He brings calm and composure on the ball and to players around him.

Meaning, he is a fine leader and certainly a possible candidate. Especially, if Amakhosi management are looking for a long-term replacement since Dolly is in the latter stage of his career.

3) ZITHA KWINIKA

Kwinika was captain of Stellenbosch FC before coming to Naturena.

So, he has experience as a leader and he was one of Zwane’s favoured starters last season. He will have also learnt a lot from Amakhosi legend Erick Mathoho in training during the Amakhosi legends final season at Naturena. However, he is yet to earn his call-up to the senior national side which could work against him.

WILDCARDS FOR CHIEFS CAPTAINCY

Given Msimango and Sifiso Hlanti’s are my wildcard selections.

This is because Msimango was captain of TS Galaxy and Hlanti is a PSL veteran with more experience than any player in this side xcept Khune.
