Kaizer Chiefs need to be in the Champions League every season

Arthur Zwane has admitted that Kaizer Chiefs hold the ambition of being in the Champions League every season.

Amakhosi last reached the Champions League off the back of their efforts in the pandemic-hit 2020/21 season.

Kaizer Chiefs need Champions League football

Ernst Middendorp got the axe after Chiefs bottled a big a lead and fell agonizingly short of ending their trophy drought with a PSL title.

Since then a two transfer window ban and the sackings of Stuart Baxter and Gavin Hunt have seen the club drift away from the top.

Under the guidance of Zwane as an interim coach, Kaizer Chiefs reached the final of the Champions League in their last appearance in the tournament.

Now the fulltime coach, Zwane says that while the title may be gone they are still in the frame for a second place finish.

While Kaizer Chiefs are 25 points off first-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, they are just four in arrears of that lucrative second spot currently occupied by newly-promoted Richards Bay FC. 

“To be honest, we will always want to put ourselves under pressure and compete at the highest level and be amongst the best,” Zwane told reporters.

“In terms of results we’ve been fluctuating, and it’s understandable because of the injuries. We will try to push hard, to push all the way and treat every game as they come to one game at a time but every game we play we play to win.

“If we get that opportunity of going to the Champions League, that’s actually where we want to go and test ourselves and play Champions League every season, ” he concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs are next in action on Sunday 5 February 2023 when they face TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.
