Akpeyi’s current contract runs until June 2022 which allows him to start negotiating with other clubs from January, should Chiefs not act.

Baxter seems to have settled on Akpeyi

After an opening period to the season, that saw Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter seemingly giving all of his four goalkeepers a chance, he eventually confirmed that he will be sticking to Akpeyi as his first choice. The Nigerian international has since rewarded Baxter through excellent form between the sticks, which has seen him firmly establish himself as the club’s first choice.

He then went on further to explain why Chiefs want to tie down Akpeyi to a new deal, and that the keeper is also keen to stay on at the club.

Feeling is mutual.

Chiefs have huge faith in Akpeyi. Both parties are on the same page in terms of their commitment to extend the player’s stay at the club. Also looking at Akpeyi’s age, he might as well retire at Chiefs.” Continued the source.

Akpeyi had initially joined Chiefs as a stop gap signing in the January transfer window of 2019. In the 2019/20 season his performances were so impressive, they saw him leapfrog then first choice keeper Itumeleng Khune. Although he has had a few form dips since, he has very rarely looked back, and has arguably been the clubs most reliable keeper since joining.
