The memory of som chaotic scenes at Moses Mabhida Stadium will still be fresh on everyone’s mind as Kaizer Chiefs return to the venue for another high-stakes game on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys take on rivals, Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout, almost a year after being knocked out of the tournament at Durban World Cup stadium by the same club in the semis.

That particular match came and went without incident, but it was not the case when Chiefs were dumped out of the Nedbank Cup in the last four just months prior.

The semifinal clash against Free State Stars lives in infamy for ugly crowd violence, which marred a special occasion for the victors, who went on to be crowned champions – their first trophy in 24 years.

Kaizer Chiefs’ plea to supporters

Now facing their biggest rivals who, like them, are in desperate need of some silverware, Kaizer Chiefs have made a special plea to the respective set of fans.

“This game, by its nature, is a knockout competition, meaning we need to have a winner on the day,” the club said in a statement on its website.

“We understand that it’s not easy for both sets of supporters to lose a fixture like the Soweto Derby. However, as true lovers of the game, we understand that there can only be one winner on the day.

“As Kaizer Chiefs, we have been working hard to ensure that we prepare the best side for the encounter and the technical team has also been working tirelessly to ensure we will put in maximum effort.

“There are some injuries, but we know that the team that will be fielded on the day will wear the jersey with pride and do all they can to ensure we will reach the next round.

“On Saturday, we appeal to our beloved supporters to arrive early, wear their colours and enjoy this great football spectacle.”

The match in Durban is a second at Moses Mabhida this season for both sides, who have touched down at the venue with contrasting results.

Kaizer Chiefs beat Black Leopards there in their second match of the league campaign, winning 1-0 through an Erick Mathoho goal.

Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, would walk away from the venue empty-handed, despite scoring three goals in a 4-3 defeat to Bidvest Wits.

Kick off on Saturday is at 15:30.
