The club legend is expecting defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to “win the league easily” but feels Kaizer Chiefs have a good chance of clinching the runner-up place if they strengthen their squad in the mid-season transfer window.

Second place would mean a return to the CAF Champions League for Kaizer Chiefs in the 2022/23 season.

They will however face stiff opposition from several teams – including their bitter Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

While he did not want to speculate on potential signings, Tovey suspects the club will look at “beefing up their defence” while also strengthening their options in midfield.

“They (Kaizer Chiefs) started getting their season going, and I think their whole season revolves around playing for that second place so that they can play in Africa next season,” Tovey reportedly told the Kickoff website.

“So that is the key this season, Sundowns will win the league easily. So I think it’s about them getting consistency in the new year after the Afcon so that they have a fighting chance for second place.

“Every team is going to go through a spell in the season where they are not achieving the results they want. It happens to every team, whether you are top of the league or whether you are bottom, it happens all the time.

“So they’ve got the momentum now, and I think they know where they probably need to strengthen up with some signings in the next month.

“They will probably try to do that, and that might take them to second place.

“They always need to make new signings this time of the year. Whether those players are now available is another story, but locally they can have a look at players.

“But if they are looking for other African players, all the decent players will be at the Afcon.

“So they know which players they want, they’ve earmarked them and they will have to strengthen up areas of their team.

“Maybe they will look at beefing up their defence, also in the central areas of midfield, so those are the obvious two for me but I can’t comment because I’m not coaching those players on a daily basis.”
