Kaizer Chiefs latest: Willard Katsande out to end bad season on a high

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has been open about the club’s struggles during the 2020/21 season and has been quick to admit that things have not gone according to script for Amakhosi.

While things have not gone according to plan locally, Katsande believes Kaizer Chiefs can still salvage their season by progressing further in the CAF Champions league.

And with a two-legged semi-final coming up against Wydad Casablanca later this month, winning their final two league games of the campaign will be key for Kaizer Chiefs ahead of their crucial games against the Moroccans.

Preparation for that begins with Kaizer Chiefs’ penultimate DStv Premiership game against Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday, 2 June.

For Willard Katsande the stakes could not be higher for Kaizer Chiefs as they are going to play an important match against Arrows after coming back from a defeat.

“We wanted a positive result from the previous league game, but it did not work out for us,” says Katsande.

“So, we just want to go and apply ourselves against Golden Arrows. We need to go and redeem ourselves as there is a lot still to play for.

“We want to do well and keep the momentum going into the Champions League. All we want to do is take it one game at a time, try to be more positive, grind the result and try to enjoy our game. The glamour boys are about enjoying the game. The more you enjoy, the more you will get the result. It’s about going out, applying ourselves and getting the result.”

Willard Katsande is banking on Kaizer Chiefs’ historical results to help them gain a win against Arrows on Wednesday.

“We know Arrows have had a good season but at the same time, we are playing at home,” quips Katsande.

“When we play at home against Arrows, we generally get a positive result and I’m confident that history is going to work in our favour come Wednesday.”

The Kaizer Chiefs midfield enforcer featured when the teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw back in November in their earlier league clash this season. He has pinpointed the reasons behind Arrows’ success in the league this season which has seen them currently occupy third place with two games to play.

“What makes them look good is continuity because they have had this group of players for some time now,” comments Katsande.

“They believe in themselves, that’s why they are where they are. They also have young and exciting players who are hungry to prove themselves in the league. Overall, we give them the respect they deserve. At the end of the day, they are coming to play Kaizer Chiefs. No matter the situation and where we are at the moment, we remain a big team – a team that attracts a huge crowd. We just need to close our last game playing at home in style.”

Katsande who has featured in 23 games in all competitions this season, is not happy with Kaizer Chiefs’ current league position and believes that the team needs to win their final two games as they owe it to their fans.

“To be honest, this is my first time being in this position at this time of the season,” he admits.

“It is not a good position to be in as a Kaizer Chiefs player. Representing the brand, you know what is required to be at Kaizer Chiefs.

“My word going out to all Amakhosi faithful is that the team will be back where it belongs and we promise to finish the season on a high. We promise to do well in the Champions League, which is very important for now. We need everyone to look at this team in a positive way”

The match will kick off at 17:00 at the FNB Stadium. No supporters will be allowed in the stadium.
