Kaizer Chiefs latest | Why is Njabulo Blom up for the Nedbank Cup award?

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom is in the running for the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament award for 2021 after being nominated in the category.

And it took a mere 45 minutes for Blom to be considered for the individual award with R50 000.

His inclusion, of course, raised eyebrows, especially because Chiefs exited the competition in the Last 32, losing to minnows Richards Bay FC with Blom being replaced just before the half-time break.

Now the burning question is, why is Blom even a nominee when he couldn’t even play the full 90 minutes for Chiefs on the day?

Blom is a talented young player with a bright future ahead of him after displaying versatility for Chiefs over the past two seasons.

He was introduced to South African football fans as a defender but gradually graduated into a solid defensive midfielder.

However, his nomination in the said category is definitely NOT justifiable no matter how one looks at it. He simply doesn’t deserve the nomination let alone the award itself.

If Blom’s nomination is about age, and there no players aged 21 and below who impressed in the tournament, then the category should perhaps have been scrapped because including players who don’t deserve to be there makes a mockery out of the awards.

Of course, Blom is not to blame for being amongst the three nominees – instead, fingers should point at those who are responsible for his nomination.

The PSL has a panel of judges that makes decisions on who should and should not be nominated, and they should hang their heads in shame for even considering Blom for the award.
