Defender Daniel Cardoso has admitted that Kaizer Chiefs senior players should take the blame for the team’s struggles this season.

Amakhosi have not had the best of seasons despite the coaching changes they made at the start of the campaign with Gavin Hunt brought in to try and steer the ship in the right direction.

However, very little has changed and Chiefs are more likely to finish the season empty-handed despite still competing in the CAF Champions League.

Domestically, Chiefs are still mathematically in the title race but they will need a miracle to overtake any of the teams vying for the league honours.

And Cardoso believes Amakhosi senior players need to step up the remaining matches of the season, adding that they have had meetings with Gavin Hunt in an attempt to find solutions.

Cardoso further said no one should fault either Hunt or his philosophy at Chiefs.

“I think as seniors, we have failed; it hasn’t been the best of seasons for us and we can see it and I think we need to step up a bit more,” Cardoso told reporters.

“We have had a couple of meetings with the coach as well and I mean, the philosophy is great there is nothing to fault him about,” he said.

Cardoso said coaches have come and gone at Chiefs – suggesting that the players who’ve been with the club for years are the ones responsible for the team’s struggles.

The former Free State Stars anchorman also believes that the two-window transfer ban imposed on Chiefs by FIFA in February 2020 had a lot to do with what they are going through.

“As you have seen over the years, we have changed coaches but we, as the players, have been at the club for quite some time.

“And also, the transfer ban did kill us. We don’t have any wingers that can give us that out and wide play,” added Cardoso.

Amakhosi welcome Stellenbosch FC to the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. Kick-off is at 5PM.
