Itumeleng Khune says Kaizer Chiefs are prepared for a “big battle” in their DStv Premiership clash with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is set to stay at Naturena beyond the expiry of his contract on Wednesday, 30 June.

According to a source known to TimesLIVE, Khune will be offered a new one-year deal with an option to renew for a further year.

The publication further reveals that this is the position of the club after discussing Khune’s future with the technical team weeks ago.

“The club’s position is to give ‘Itu’ an extension of one year plus one. It was discussed by the technical team two weeks ago‚” the source said.

Khune had been kept in the dark for the time being as the club wanted the entire Chiefs team to focus on the CAF Champions League.

“Nothing has been discussed directly with the player. The focus was on the Champions League campaign,” concluded the source.

Chiefs booked their place in the CAF Champions League final with a 1-0 aggregate win over Wydad Casablanca last weekend.

And they will meet Al Ahly on 17 July, but no less than 10 players, including Khune, need to have their contracts renewed.

Khune has been with Amakhosi’s first team since his promotion from the development in 2004, and there had been reports of him possibly leaving the club this year.

However, as The South African reported in April 2021, Khune was, in all likelihood, expected to stay at Chiefs as the club had an option to renew on his contract.

What the proposed new deal means is that Khune could be offered a new salary package as a reward for his long service to the club.
