Kaizer Chiefs latest: Khune the ONLY Amakhosi captain staying… for now

Kaizer Chiefs have parted ways with ELEVEN players, including two of their leaders who wore the captain’s armband over the last few seasons.

Kaizer Chiefs have parted ways with ELEVEN players, including two of their leaders who wore the captain’s armband over the last few seasons.

And those are Bernard Parker and Ramahlwe Mphahlele who spent 11 and six years respectively at Naturena before the club took the decision to let them go.

When Stuart Baxter took over at the start of last season, he maintained that Itumeleng Khune was the Chiefs captain.

However, that armband was often handed to Parker as Khune struggled for game time for the better part of the camapign, featuring just once all season.

ITUMELENG KHUNE THE ONLY REAL KAIZER CHIEFS CAPTAIN LEFT

Khune turned 35 on Monday, 20 June, and with Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen receiving more game time than him last season, chances of him featuring regularly next season are almost non-existent.

However, he remains the ONLY real Amakhosi captain in the current squad – Khune has been captain since 2010.

What this means is that Khune been the Chiefs leader for 11 years if one excludes the 2015-16 season which saw Siphiwe Tshabalala take over from him.

Khune still has a year left on his current contract, and as things stand, he appears likely to be kept as the Chiefs captain for the new season.

The fact that he’s the longest-serving member of the squad puts him head of shoulders above the rest of his current Chiefs teammates.

Erick Mathoho is the only other player who’s been with Chiefs for 10 years or more – but the lanky defender has never been seen as a captain at Naturena.

And his chances of assuming the role of captain next season are minimal, especially after the wholesale changes Chiefs made to their playing squad.

The question on everyone’s lips is who the Glamour Boys will appoint as their captain at the start of next season. Only time will tell…
