Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has revealed his prime focus from the first day he joined the club was the strong mentality and attitude from his players.

Hunt said this is because of the psychological effect the players had when Chiefs lost the PSL title to Mamelodi Sundowns on the final day of the season.

According to Hunt, Chiefs players were mentally fatigued when he came in, and he believes they needed some time away from football to deal with missing out on the league title.

“If you go back to the start of the season, that’s been my prime focus,” Hunt told the media.

“I think mentality is a very important aspect. The team that I took over was mentally fatigued after what happened last season.

“I think there was a meltdown and they needed to have some time away from football which we couldn’t have,” he said.

While Hunt still feels Chiefs players need a break from football, he admits the team is slowly turning the corner, and this was evident when they beat Wydad Casablanca 1-0 in the CAF Champions League this past weekend.

“If you understand football, you’ll know that sometimes less is better and we really need less (football activity) at the moment,” he continued.

“A few days… to not go to training and just get away from football would do us good. Slowly but surely, I’m seeing a turnaround in the team and that’s important,” concluded Hunt.
