Kaizer Chiefs: Itumeleng Khune set for Soweto derby return

Amakhosi legend and Kaizer Chiefs fan-favourite Itumeleng Khune is set for a return to action in the up-and-coming Soweto derby.

Khune is set for a likely return to action in the Soweto derby.

This comes after Brandon Peterson was suspended by the PSL.

KHUNE SET FOR CHIEFS RETURN IN SOWETO DERBY

Khune is set to return to action for the first time since the end of January.

Furthermore, he is also likely to take up the captains armband once more.

This is because he is club captain and stand-in captain. Furthermore, Keagan Dolly has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

So, Khune should start in goal against Moroka Swallows on Monday, 1 May.

As previously mentioned, Khune has not started since the end of January where he last started in Amakhosi’s DStv Premiership loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Therefore, this is a rare opportunity for the Amakhosi legend to prove to Arthur Zwane and Amakhosi management that he’s still got it. In fact, it comes at a crucial time for Amakhosi’s captain as his contract is coming to an end at the end of the season.

TWO SOWETO DERBIES IN A WEEK FOR AMAKHOSI

This will be the first of two Soweto derbies for Amakhosi who are set to take on Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday, 6 May 2023.

Both matches carry massive significance for Zwane and the Soweto giants. The PSL encounter on Monday is a must-win for his side if they are to maintain their slim hopes of playing CAF football next season alive.

Finally, the much-anticipated match against Pirates has the added importance if being a Nedbank Cup semi-final. Therefore, this match is crucial for the Glamour Boys if they are to secure their first title in over 7 years.
