Itumeleng Khune made it clear that he is not planning on hanging up his boots. However, this could see him leave Kaizer Chiefs for their PSL rivals.

Khune was honoured for 25 years of service to Chiefs in their goalless draw against Polokwane City during their DStv Premiership encounter on Saturday, 18 May.

is contract is set to expire at the season. In tandem with his recent suspension, many felt that this was his farewell and an indication that his days at Naturena are numbered. However, Khune dropped a teasing hint during his post-match interview. Leading fans to believe he will stay on at the club.

KHUNE COULD LEAVE CHIEFS TO CONTINUE HIS PLAYING CAREER

Initially, the plan was for him to take up an Ambassadorial role or to join the technical staff as a goalkeeper coach. However, Khune stated that he still wants to play. So, he does not plan on hanging up his boots – or goes – anytime soon.

“Itumeleng Khune isn’t even thinking about retiring yet, and that you should know. But why should he retire? He is 36 years old (turning 37 in June), and for a goalkeeper that isn’t a retirement age, especially for someone who is on top of his game. I talk to the boy quite often and he feels he still needs to play because he feels he is enjoying his game despite having been limited for game time this season,” the insider stated on SoccerLaduma.

Interestingly, Khune would rather leave Chiefs to continue playing instead of retiring.

“So, if an opportunity for him to play isn’t available at Chiefs, expect him to assess his options elsewhere because all he wants is to play,” the report read on the same publication.

PSL RIVALS TABLE OFFER FOR AMAKHOSI LEGEND

Therefore, Khune could sign for another club if Amakhosi opt against extending his contract. As things stand, this is likely to happen. Earlier in the year, Khune was suspended for allegedly arriving to training drunk. Given the fact that the club has a zero tolerance policy towards alcohol and substance use, this seemed to deter his hopes of earning a contract extension. Furthermore, they have identified targets while grooming their young goalkeepers over the past few months. They have identified this man as his future replacement, dubbed ‘the next Khune’.

In fact, Sekhukhune United made an offer for Khune earlier in the season. Also, he will not be short of suitors given his experience. At the end of the day, the decision will come down to two key factors. Khune’s career path and Amakhosi’s final decision. So, whoever, is appointed as new coach will have the final say on Khune and several stars. Unless, management makes a decision prior to appointing their new coach.

Regardless, Khune has made it clear that he still wants to play so at the end of the day the ball is in his court (or net). Therefore, a move to another club is likely unless management have a change of mind.
