Kaizer Chiefs fans, will you miss this player when he leaves?

Kaizer Chiefs fans are set to say a series of goodbyes at Naturena. Some of those will be sadder than others.

It’s a crying shame that Kaizer Chiefs fans never got to see the best of Khama Billiat in a black and gold jersey. It begs the question, will they ever see him don the famous colours again?

BILLIAT STUCK ON 97

Khama’s 24 goals and 29 assists in 126 appearances mean he’s been directly contributing to 0.42 goals per game. Contrast that with his stats for Sundowns, where his direct output was 0.63 goals per game (48 goals and 43 assists in 144 appearances for the Brazilians). That’s a significant drop-off, and not all of it can be explained by Billiat being surrounded by better players at Masandawana.

2022-23 HAS BEEN AWFUL FOR KHAMA

The first few months of 2022-23 were stop/start for Billiat, to put it mildly. He created three goals for teammates early in the campaign but then his output dropped off significantly. In early February of 2023, he underwent groin surgery which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. It was a cruel blow for the wide man, but in a way it summed up his Kaizer Chiefs career so far. He’s made just 10 league appearances this term.

EXPIRING CONTRACT

Billiat is 32 and will turn 33 in August. With his contract at Amakhosi expiring in June, it’s almost certain that he will become a free agent at the end of the 2022-23 campaign. Injuries, as well as inconsistency, have made this latest chapter one to forget for a player of undoubted quality and pedigree.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

That’s anyone’s guess. A move to another PSL club wouldn’t be out of the question, but it also wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see him get a lucrative move abroad. It’s sad to see one of the league’s greatest ever players, who used to burn so bright, fizzle out like this. 2016’s PSL Player of the Year just isn’t himself anymore though. Still, Billiat was an electric performer in his heyday and nobody can take that away from him.
