One of the 10 players released or transfer-listed last week by Kaizer Chiefs is reportedly closing in on a move to another Gauteng-based DStv Premiership club.

Having cut no fewer than 14 players themselves – including goalkeepers Tapuwa Kapini and Ayanda DlaminiSekhukhune United have their sights set on Nigerian shot-stopper Daniel Akpeyi who will officially became a free agent at the end of the month after being released by Kaizer Chiefs.

As reported by The South African website, 35-year-old Akpeyi has also attracted interest from Royal AM suggesting he won’t be unemployed for long after his departure from Naturena.

According to the Soccer Laduma website, a source close to Akpeyi has confirmed that the player’s representative, Mohammed Lawal, was spotted at the Babina Noko offices in Johannesburg to discuss a potential move.

“Daniel Akpeyi has attracted from Sekhukhune United after leaving Kaizer Chiefs. The club is in negotiations with the player’s agent to sign him. Akpeyi’s agent Mohammed Lawal has already been at Sekhukhune to discuss the deal. It’s not a not a done deal yet but negotiations are at an advanced stage,” said the source.

In addition to releasing 14 players, Sekhukhune United said goodbye to co-coach Owen Da Gama ahead of the new season.

They also face a fight to hold onto in-demand star midfielder Yusuf Maart.
