Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Peter Matshitse believes that if Amakhosi lose their ongoing case against the PSL and are forced to forfeit the six points for missing their Cape Town City FC and Golden Arrows matches, then their DStv Premiership title hopes would be over for another season.

Kaizer Chiefs are anxiously waiting on the PSL for their final verdict after the Glamour Boys missed two league matches in December 2021 after a coronavirus outbreak in their camp.

Amakhosi have stated that they will fight any verdict that goes against them and have reportedly assembled a heavyweight legal team.

Kaizer Chiefs simply cannot afford to ‘lose’ the possible six points on offer from those matches if they wish to have any say in the outcome of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership title.

It would also severely hamper their chances of qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

As the log currently stands, Kaizer Chiefs are in fourth place with 28 points from 16 matches.

They trail runaway log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 16 points, but have played three fewer matches.

However, should the PSL rule against Kaizer Chiefs, the Soweto giants will only have one match in hand.

Peter “Big Five” Matshitse told the Kickoff website, that it was tough to lose any points in the league race.

“Every time you lose three points it hurts, it leaves a huge gap,” Matshitse said.

“You gain three points you find yourself moving from position 10 to 6, you drop three points it hurts you in the long run.

“We all know the rules when it comes to Covid, if you have it then you can’t infect the others.”

Matshitse, now 50, added that he didn’t think Kaizer Chiefs would end up being forced to forfeit the two matches and that a fine may well be their punishment.

“People’s safety was the main concern in Chiefs’ decision not to honour the two fixtures, I don’t think Chiefs will lose the six points though.

“The way I understand South African football Chiefs will be fined, and they will be allowed to play the two games.

“I’m expecting them to be fined and nothing more,” Matshitse added.

Peter Matshitse was highly rated during his playing days.

He represented a host of top South African clubs apart from Kaizer Chiefs, including Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, Zulu Royals, Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos.

After retiring as a player, Matshitse became a coach at Mothupi Birds United.
