AmaZulu 4-0 Kaizer Chiefs: Glamour Boys haunted by ghosts from the past in dismal defeat

Kaizer Chiefs went down 4-0 to AmaZulu on Friday night meaning they’ve not beaten Usuthu since January 13th 2021.

Here’s our match report detailing where it all went wrong for the visitors.

BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW: Kaizer Chiefs fans need to drastically adjust their expectations

Chiefs dominate possession but fail to make it count

Amakhosi had almost 60% of the possession and completed more passes than AmaZulu but they didn’t make the most of their dominance in those metrics. They were also left to rue a missed penalty by Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana when they still only trailed 1-0; the Burundian striker’s spot-kick was expertly saved by the outstanding Veli Mothwa. There was also a fizzing effort from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo which sailed just wide.

Chiefs dead and buried by halftime

Arthur Zwane’s men were already effectively out of the contest by halftime, trailing 3-0 to goals by Dumisani Zuma, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Sede Junior Dion. To make matters worse for Arthur Zwane, a host of former Chiefs players were the architects of this defeat.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Kaizer Chiefs are the Man United of South Africa

George Maluleka supplied two of the goals, while the aforementioned Zuma and Mphahlele were on the score sheet for the hosts. All three used to be on the books of Amakhosi. Chiefs improved considerably in the second half, fashioning decent chances for Ngcobo and Edmilson Dove, but the damage was already done. Overall, though, their shooting was wayward because on another night, they could and probably should have had at least three goals.

Substitute Bongi Ntuli added a fourth in stoppage time to rub salt into Chiefs wounds.

OPINION: The Man United star who will decide the 189th Manchester Derby

AmaZulu are now unbeaten in seven consecutive head-to-heads with the Glamour Boys. The last time Usuthu tasted defeat at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs was exactly two years ago, to the day, on January 13th 2021.

What next for Arthur Zwane and his beleaguered Chiefs players? Well, they face all-conquering Mamelodi Sundowns next Saturday. Oh dear.
