Chiefs were thought to be in a two-horse race for Mokoena with Mamelodi Sundowns, but it is now thought be just a matter of time until he signs for Ka Bo Yellow.

Chiefs were competing with Sundowns for Mokoena

Chiefs and Sundowns were, for the longest time, believed to be the two clubs who were playing going head to head for Mokoena’s services. The lead in that race seemed to exchange hands so many times, similarly to the situation regarding another SuperSport midfielder Sipho Mbule. In fact, just like with Mbule, Mokoena had seemed to give Amakhosi encouragement by reportedly stating that he preferred a move to Naturena instead.

During this time, SuperSport were not opposed to selling Mokoena to either of Chiefs or Sundowns, but were quick to reiterate their preference to sell him abroad. This was due to the club believing that the player had a high ceiling and that his growth would be better served playing abroad. They also, obviously did not want to strengthen their DStv Premiership rivals any further, unless a seriously strong offer came from one of them.

The Brazilians seem to have won the battle

In the end, it would be Sundowns who would take the next step and agree terms with Mokoena and are now thought to be close to sealing the deal with SuperSport. This would mean yet another transfer target they would have beaten Chiefs to in recent years. Now Amakhosi’s corporate communications manager Vina Maphosa has confirmed their pursuit in the player and how they got, after the players agent Glyn Binkin confirmed interest from the Soweto giants.

Amakhosi confirm how far they got

From the club (Chiefs) side, what Glyn said is what he is saying, and we don’t have anything to say about that. But when we engage in negotiations with anybody, we take it the negotiations are within that space and in good faith, and not for anybody to go out and perhaps paint the discussions in the way they were presented by what you are asking me. There were discussions (about Mokoena), and that’s what it is.”  Said Maphosa to TimesLIVE

“If I come to you and discuss with you, and then we end at a certain point, it means that point is the end. It doesn’t mean it didn’t go further. It might have been that from where the discussions were we retreated back to our base camp to go and analyse how the discussions were going. What if we come back to him [Binkin] tomorrow and say we want to resume? Did he mention if there were deadlines? That is where the difficulty is. What he said doesn’t reveal where we ended with him.” Maphosa continued.

It seems very unlikely that Chiefs will go back in for Mokoena, as it looks like his move to Sundowns is all but completed. Fans of the Glamour Boys, however, will undoubtedly be disappointed at the news.
