After keeping a clean sheet the week prior, Itumeleng Khune was left out of the Kaizer Chiefs XI ahead of the 2-1 defeat to Maritzburg United.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp was the recipient of a bit of stick over his selection, following the defeat to Maritzburg United over the weekend.

Despite having the experienced Itumeleng Khune back, the German opted to go with what has worked for him throughout the season, as he named Daniel Akpeyi between the posts.

Kaizer Chiefs coach hits back at criticism

It was after a costly blunder from the Nigerian international that Middendorp came under heavy criticism for not handing the Bafana keeper another start after his return to action the week prior.

The 60-year-old has hit back at his critics, defending his decision to stick with Akpeyi.

“Often I’m not in charge of what is written [in the media]. I know it’s something where the entire [support-base] looks into it – ‘This one must play; this one must play,’” said Middendorp.

“Are you really convinced that our goalkeeper coaching department is not able to see what’s going on; to see what’s happened and when is the right timing [to select a player]?”

Easing Itumeleng Khune back

Khune only managed two competitive appearances for Kaizer Chiefs the whole of 2019, before making his way back to action in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 match against Royal Eagles.

This was his first start since September when he played just 28 minutes against Baroka before being subbed off with a groin injury, just two matches after returning from a shoulder knock that kept him out of action for the second half of the second season.

Middendorp suggested that the decision to leave Khune out was made with the intention to ease him back into action.

“There was a player, he had been thrown in too early, and I said it in October, from one week to another one, and what happened? Out for three-four months again,” he said.

“Even with Khama Billiat, there was a very clear plan – I hope he comes through – to play him 60 minutes, but he was quite excited so he stayed on for 90 minutes.

“It was a high risk, and we really have to look into it individually, how far a player is prepare to play week-in, week-out for 90 minutes or every two or three days.

“I see the headlines already, you don’t have to have a magic wand to see all the headlines tomorrow – it makes it not easy for the entire goalkeeper department.”
