Kaizer Chiefs captaincy dilemma: Arthur Zwane’s huge decision!

Zwane must select his captain to lead out Amakhosi against the Bucs in their Nedbank Cup semi-final on Saturday, 06 May 2023.

However, he has had a couple of curveballs thrown his way ahead of selecting his captain for the Soweto derby.

Itumeleng Khune is club captain but he is likely to be replaced by Brandon Peterson. Furthermore, stand-in captain Keagan Dolly is out injured. So, Zwane must choose between Khune and Maart.

CHIEFS CAPTAINCY DILEMMA FOR ZWANE AHEAD OF SOWETO DERBY

At the start of the season, this would have been a simple equation.

Since Khune is the official club captain, he would have been the favourite to lead out Amakhosi.

However, a lot has happened from the start of the season until now.

During this time, Brandon Peterson has become the first choice goalkeeper and he has excelled in-goal for the Soweto giants this season. Peterson has 10 clean sheets in 19 appearances in the PSL this season. He was only excluded from Amakhosi’s recent starting line-up against Moroka Swallows due to suspension.

MAART OR KHUNE TO LEAD OUT AMAKHOSI?

Meaning, he is strongly favoured to return to the starting line-up.

With Dolly out for the remainder of the season this leaves Maart as the likely man to captain Amakhosi against the Bucs this weekend.

However, Zwane was impressed by Khune’s display against Swallows, which makes this even more interesting. Given the vast experience Khune has in Soweto derbies, this is not an easy decision for Zwane to make.
