Kaizer Chiefs: Caleb Bimenyimana’s stats don’t make for great reading

Kaizer Chiefs striker Caleb Bimenyimana started like a house on fire at Naturena, but that fire has gone out. Why is that so?

FA CUP FINAL: Man City and Pep Guardiola sweating over KEY trio

Bimenyimana started life at Kaizer Chiefs well

25-year-old Burundi striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana got off to a great start at Naturena, scoring seven goals in his first six games for the Glamour Boys. Since the turn of the year, however, he’s become a fringe squad member and played hardly any minutes. Overall, he’s got seven goals and an assist from 17 PSL appearances. It’s not an atrocious record, but the biggest concern within the camp, allegedly, is that his playing style doesn’t fit the philosophy at Naturena.

TASTY: Three ZINGER options for Kaizer Chiefs on the wings

Caleb’s 2022-23 in a nutshell

Caleb made 21 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs across all competitions this season, scoring eight times. His most recent strike, and his only one this calendar year, came in March from the penalty spot against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup round of 16. He scored a hat-trick of penalties against Stellenbosch, making history in the process as the first man ever to strike three successful spot-kicks in a single PSL match, but scoring from open play has been an issue for the big man from Bujumbura in Burundi.

Emergence of Du Preez

Ashley Du Preez had his initial struggles this season too, but he’s made the striking position his own with a string of stirring displays at the back-end of the campaign. His dynamism and physicality gives Chiefs options and increased fluidity in attack, whereas Caleb has been more static.

It’s understood that Chiefs are sounding out a variety of options to bolster their attack with the likes of Fiston Mayele, Ranga Chivaviro and Khanyisa Mayo all mentioned.
