Kaizer Chiefs finished a distant second-best in the CAF Champions League last season, but will take solace from the fact that they still banked over R20 million in total prize money in the 2020/21 season.

Last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Egyptian giants Al Ahly saw Amakhosi miss out on the top prize of a cool $2.5 million (R37 million) – which would’ve grown even further with guaranteed winnings from the CAF Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Instead, Kaizer Chiefs had to “settle” for $1.25 million (R18.5 million) for their runner-up spot.

That CAF Champions League windfall helped elevate Kaizer Chiefs to second place overall behind Mamelodi Sundowns in money won from all competitions last season.

A dismal DStv Premiership campaign left Amakhosi with a “mere” R2.4 million after finishing eighth in the standings. In addition they reached the MTN8 semi-finals, but were humiliated in the first round of the Nedbank Cup.

Their CAF money helped boost their total earnings to around R20.5 million.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns won R15 million after being crowned DStv Premiership champions for a fourth consecutive year (and 11th time overall), R3 million for two Q-innovations, R800 000 from the MTN8 and R1.25 million for reaching the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.

In addition, for reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, the Brazilians took home a further $650 000 (R9.6 million) to push their total for the season to a little over R29.6 million.

Rounding out the ‘podium’ in third place was Orlando Pirates who earned R12.4 million in local competitions and added $350 000 (R5.2 million) after reaching the last eight of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Their total earnings for the season came to roughly R17.6 million.
