Kaizer Chiefs hopes of reaching next season’s Caf Champions League could be set to suffer a major blow.

The PSL would not announce the findings of its disciplinary process until arbitration proceedings initiated by Kaizer Chiefs were concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs are in the dock regarding PSL matches they failed to honour in December. Matches against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows were called off before Christmas citing the severe outbreak of Covid-19 at Naturena.

Following the outbreak at their base, Kaizer Chiefs applied to have their matches postponed, but they were rejected by the PSL, who then raised charges against them.

The Glamour Boys would then appeal the PSL decision escalating the matter to SAFA arbitration which is now overseeing the case.

Advocate Nazeer Cassim SC will determine whether Amakhosi are sanctioned for that failure or whether the club will be allowed to play those two games.

With Chiefs locked in a three-way battle for second with Orlando Pirates and Royal AM, a situation where they are docked points will be a nightmare for Stuart Baxter and company.

The title race

Chiefs also mathematically remain in the title race although if their unplayed matches are forfeit, those chances will go up in smoke.

Sundowns are way ahead but having two extra games in hand would be a boost to Chiefs.

Kaizer Chiefs are third on the PSL log standings with 35 points from 19 games and two games in hand (plus the two pending) over leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, which leaves them a potential 12 points to claim in catching up.

With those 12 points on the line, Chiefs can cut Sundowns’ lead to just four, if results go their way.

Also in Kaizer Chiefs favour, is the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns remain in the Caf Chamoions League, having booked a spot in the knockout stages.
