Fans of the beautiful game are in for a treat in the coming weeks with two Soweto Derby fixtures coming in quick succession after Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were drawn against one another in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinal draw.

The two teams are scheduled to compete in the league on Saturday 9 November and are also due to slug it out again in the country’s League Cup.

Twin derbies await Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs

This is after the eight remaining spots were decided on Tuesday night, with Chippa United joining the teams that won over the weekend after a narrow victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in Mdantsane.

Pirates, who finished high in the league standings in the previous season were placed in Pot A, giving them another shot at being drawn against their bitter rivals, who were in the second pot after their ninth-place finish.

The dream match-up came to fruition as Amakhosi were called out against the Buccaneers in what is the repeat of the 2018 Telkom Knockout semi final , where goals from Thembinkosi Lorch and Justin Shonga saw the latter through to the final.

Both sides progressed past the Round of 16 with the narrowest of margins on Saturday, with Chiefs beating Cape Town City on penalties before Lorch’s 83rd minute goal gave Pirates victory over tournament debutants, Stellenbosch FC.

Other TKO match-ups

In the other quarterfinal fixtures, Supersport United will continue their pursuit of a second trophy this season with a clash against Golden Arrows. This is after Matsatsansa saw off 2018 champions Baroka on Saturday night, whIle Abafana Besthende were victorious against Polokwane City earlier on the day.

Reigning league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns square off against Chippa, the side which ended their tournament in 2017.

The Tshwane giants were in fine form in their first-round fixture, putting a hapless AmaZulu to the sword at Lucas Moripe Stadium to emerge 5-0 victors.

The other match-up sees Maritzburg United take on Highlands Park, who recently made their first ever cup final in the MTN8.

Both teams needed penalties to progress through to the next round, with the Team of Choice bagging a big scalp in Bidvest, while the Lions of the North were on the money against Black Leopards.
