Chiefs have earned the reputation of specialising in the signing of free agents in recent years, becoming a mockery to rival fans as a result.

Chiefs were an attractive brand

As a giant of the South African football fraternity, Chiefs earned their reputation through attracting some of the finest talents from both the country and the continent. The club were also not afraid to put up the big bucks to stave off interest from their rivals for such talents. That would then form the foundation of what would see the club earn the tag as the country’s glamour club.

Over the past seven years, however, Chiefs have fallen someway off that pace. Since current coach Stuart Baxter departed from his first stint at the club, they have become synonymous for making mediocre free agent signings. So poor has been the quality of some of those free agent acquisitions, that they are often shipped off the very next season.

Sundowns now financially superior in the market

It is then perhaps, no coincidence that Chiefs have suffered a trophy drought between Baxter’s previous and current spell. Having seen the club lose out on the likes of Teboho Mokoena to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, the fans have finally voiced their concerns of the situation to the club’s management. Club sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr broke down the situation in detail.

Motaung Jnr explains situation

“We’re in the business of football so whether you’re at Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, you really think Real or other teams, no matter what the figure is, they would always pay it? It’s not the case, I take the point that it’s part of what we have to do but there’s a big misconception, the team has bought players, the team has to pay salaries and you have to plan for all of these things to happen. The team has been in the transfer market.”. Said the former Chiefs striker to Twitter Spaces via iDiskiTimes.

Motaung then went into more details about the complications that Chiefs often run into, with regards to the matter at hand. He then also labelled the statement as false.

Calls the rumours false

“It’s all about transactions and again we need to understand that a lot of the time, our rivals, people don’t want to do business with you, that’s just the industry you’re in. So I just want to clear it’s a huge misconception. You have to assess it based on the situation, I don’t think there are clubs that you know pay and sign without looking at the return on investment, you’re gonna put out money and say listen this is what we’re going to achieve from that. ransfers are always a bit of a tricky one for people because sometimes people have the misconception that the team doesn’t spend money. But if you look at the money that is spent, it’s a lot of money. Salaries are factored into that – I take the point but we’re always looking to be as competitive as we can be in the transfer market.” Concluded Motaung Jnr on the topic.

Chiefs fans will be hoping to see the club return to the transfer strategy that made it the most successful team in country, in the close season.
