Former Kaizer Chiefs footballer, turned analyst Junior Khanye believes he knows who is to blame for the current saga between his former club and the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Chiefs have failed to honour their last two PSL fixtures due to an outburst of Covid-19 cases in their camp, and Khanye has since voiced his opinion on the matter.

Chiefs have been battling a Covid-19 outbreak

Just over a week ago, Chiefs released a statement informing the public that they had been hit with a mass outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. The club reported 31 positive cases last week, which then prompted them to write to the PSL, appealing for the postponement of their next five games. They did not get a reply from the league, which then prompted last week’s would’ve been opponents, Cape Town City to travel to Johannesburg for nothing.

The cases within the Chiefs camp then increased to 36 during the course of this week, which meant that they could not honour their fixture against Golden Arrows on Wednesday either, with more uncertainty now engulfing that game and the situation of points awarded or not. Khanye, usually very vocal in his criticism of his former club has now expressed his sympathy with Amakhosi.

Khanye weighs in on the situation

“First of all what is happening at Kaizer Chiefs is a sad thing, “This can happen to anyone. These are human beings, after all, they didn’t invite this. It’s so painful. But now the rules of the PSL require you to use your Diski team. I know the Diski league has closed, and this has made it difficult for Kaizer Chiefs. Also other people may see this as a joke, but we need to feel whatever they feel as these are humans after all.” Said Khanye to kickoff.com

Khanye then laid in to PSL for how they have handled this situation pertaining to Chiefs.

He feels the PSL could be handling the situation better

“What makes this thing difficult are the rules, The PSL were supposed to resolve this long before the referees even travelled to the stadium. Because it has now become a similar case to the one matter of Royal AM when they (Chiefs)  refused to honour the playoff fixtures. They didn’t pitch up, and the referees were there, which means officially the game is playing. So points will be taken.” Continued Khanye

“Last week when they were supposed to face Cape Town City, I saw the officials were there, the PSL shouldn’t have allowed that to happen. Because when it’s like this it’s Kaizer Chiefs that will suffer. When referees are present it means the PSL has approved the game is taking place. If the PSL allows the referees to enter the pitch or go to the stadium, then they mean it’s a walkover for Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.” Concluded Khanye

Will Amakhosi pitch up this time?

Certain Chiefs players are believed to have returned to training on Thursday and it now remains to be seen if they will be able to honour their next fixture against Sekhukhune United, scheduled for Sunday.
