Josef Zinnbauer has vacated his position as head coach of Orlando Pirates, and the reason behind his resignation has been revealed.

Josef Zinnbauer has vacated his position as head coach of Orlando Pirates, and the reason behind his resignation has been revealed.

According to Zinnbauer, the real reason he resigned from Pirates is because he wanted to be with his family in Germany.

Zinnbauer said he had been away from his family for two years, having arrived in South Africa in December 2019.

“I have spent the last two years away from my family and for this reason I have decided to hand in my resignation,” said Zinnbauer to the Pirates website.

“I would like to wish the club and its supporters all the best for the future,” added Zinnbauer.

Zinnbauer arrived in the country as a relatively unknown to South African football fans despite his coaching background in the German Bundesliga.

And while he did his best to end Pirates’ six-year trophy wait by winning the MTN8 in 2020, his failure to turn the club into serious league challengers saw fans fall out of love with him.

Pirates, under Zinnbauer, was also expected to do better in last season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

However, the Buccaneers would exit the tournament at the quarter-final stage, and that didn’t sit well with the majority of the club supporters.

And calls for him to be sacked started to again momentum until this past weekend when Pirates lost 2-1 to Swallows in the MTN8.
