Hosts Ivory Coast open AFCON 2023 with solid victory

2023 AFCON hosts Ivory Coast earned a comfortable 2-0 Group A victory over Guinea-Bissau on Saturday night

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) got underway on Saturday night with hosts Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé.

The 1992 champions, Ivory Coast got off to a dream start thanks to Seko Fofana’s incredible strike in the fourth minute!

Jean Krasso then doubled the lead in the 58th minute through another well taken acrobatic finish from inside the box.

There were no further goals at the Olympic Stadium, with the AFCON hosts walking away with a 2-0 victory. The win places the Ivorians in top spot in group A while Guinea-Bissau sit in fourth.

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea face off in Group A’s second match tomorrow afternoon at 16:00.

Tonight’s AFCON clash between Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau gets underway at 22:00.

The match will be televised live on SABC1 and SuperSport PSL.

“I am satisfied the appropriate steps have been taken to make sure we will totally avoid the painful experience we had in Cameroon,” – CAF president Patrice Motsepe told SuperSport.

“For as long as I am president, whether I know or don’t know, whether I am aware or not aware, I ultimately have to take responsibility for anything that happens.

“I am satisfied that there is a huge amount of determination and commitment and I think we are on the right track. The Cameroon AFCON accident was absolutely avoidable.”
