“Itumeleng Khune should assist Arthur Zwane”- Kaizer Chiefs legend

Kaizer Chiefs legend Zebulon Nhlapo suggests that his former club should appoint current keeper Itumeleng Khune as assistant coach to Arthur Zwane.

Khune has been out of favour at Chiefs for the better part of two season now, and Nhlapo believes he could be useful else where. 

Khune’s prospects didn’t change under Baxter

The arrival of coach Stuart Baxter was thought by many, that it would reignite the career of Khune at Chiefs. The duo had previously worked well together both at Amakhosi and at national team level for Bafana Bafana. However, it did not quite work out like that, as the player found himself on the peripheries of the team, just like was mostly the case under previous coach, Gavin Hunt.

Now that Baxter has been fired, Khune’s fortunes may or may not change, but Nhlapo has suggested to kickoff.com that the veteran goalkeeper be deployed in a different role, that could see him hang up his playing boots should he oblige.

Nhlapo backs Zwane

“To me, Arthur (Zwane) is the right man for the (Chiefs) job, Age doesn’t matter in football, during our time we were coached by our teammates who had then just retired such as Banks Sethlodi, who was assisted by Doctor Khumalo’s father where we won four titles. That’s because they understood the culture of the team very well those two. All these boys like Njabulo Blom, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Happy Mashiane were produced by Arthur.

The team he had in the MDC, I used to travel all the way to Tembisa, Sinaba, Tsakane, just to watch them play.

Arthur knows and understands Chiefs’ culture. They must give the head coach position to Arthur permanently, he must then be given enough time. Khune has lots of experience, they must try him as Arthur’s assistant, these two know everything about Chiefs.We are tired of this European style of play, we need to bring back the Chiefs way of playing football.Most of the time Khune sits in the stands, maybe because of his age, he is the only player to have played for more than 20 years, so he has experience in abundance.”. Nhlapo said.

Would this prove to be a good idea to have him as an assistant to Zwane?, or does Khune still have something to offer Chiefs on the playing field?
