LATEST: SITHEBE HAS ALREADY PICKED OUT CHIEFS JERSEY NUMBER – REPORT

Despite his experience and senior status at the Soweto giants – and being fit and available for selection – Khune is yet to play a single minute for coach Stuart Baxter’s side in the DStv Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs have played 16 league games (maybe 18) to date with Daniel Akpeyi being the preferred choice between the posts for the majority of Amakhosi’s matches to date.

Kaizer Chiefs have played 16 league matches, but they are currently embroiled in an ugly legal battle with the PSL after they missed two other clashes due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.

The Glamour Boys requested that all five of their matches last December be postponed, but the PSL was having none of it.

Kaizer Chiefs failed to show up for the first two, but crucially did play the final three in 2021 – winning two and losing the other.

Khune is set to play some role in the upcoming DStv Compact Cup after being voted to represent the Warriors FC along with Bruce Bvuma.

Each team in the DStv Compact Cup will play two matches, so it’s likely Khune will get at least 90 minutes.

Itumeleng Khune’s only appearance came in the MTN8

The lone appearance that Khune has made this season for Kaizer Chiefs was in their MTN8 quarter-final defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns when he conceded twice during regulation time.

Khune, now 34-year-old, remains under contract until the end of next season and is already the longest-serving player at the club having made his first-team debut back in 2007.

It could be a looooong next 18 months for ‘Spider Kid’ if he’s just going to sit on the bench – or not even that.

Khune has played 327 matches for Kaizer Chiefs in all comeptitions.

He also has 91 Bafana Bafana caps to his name.
