Reminder: How Sundowns can win the league THIS weekend

Although Sundowns aren’t playing in the league this weekend, they will be keeping a close eye on SuperSport United on Saturday. Here’s why.

As it stands, Sundowns are the runaway leaders in the DStv Premiership on 59 log points, while second-placed SuperSport United are as many as 20 points behind them.

The Brazilians are in fact so far ahead that when running the numbers, it’s evident that Sundowns can mathematically be crowned league champions for the sixth successive time, without even playing. Their next DStv Premiership is only on Tuesday, 4 April.

However, it’s worth noting that even if Matsatsantsa win all of their remaining games, the most they could finish on is 60 log points.

Sundowns could be crowned champions sooner than expected

This means that if SuperSport were to draw or lose against Chippa United on Saturday (kick-off is at 15.30), then Sundowns would be crowned champions without even playing!

Pirates and Chiefs sit third and fourth on the log, with 37 log points, and so even if they win all of their remaining games, they wouldn’t be able to catch Sundowns.

It’s all just semantics, though, as no one is going to catch Sundowns – although it would truly be an unconventional finish to the title race if SuperSport don’t win this weekend, leaving Sundowns to pop the champagne before even returning to league action next week.

For the Brazilians, this would be a sixth successive DStv Premiership as they continue to take their dominance of the league to new heights.
