Steve Komphela hosts former side Kaizer Chiefs at the scene of his final match in charge as Golden Arrows play Amakhosi at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

This venue holds bittersweet memories for Komphela, who resigned after fan violence at the stadium. Protests erupted after Chiefs lost their 2018 Nedbank Cup semi-final 2-0 to Free State Stars.

Komphela’s career has undergone a rebirth of sorts since. He played a huge role in Bloemfontein Celtic’s top eight finish last season and is on course to lead Abafana Bes’thende to the MTN8 this year.

Arrows drew 1-1 to Polokwane City in their last game after letting a lead slip. Mohammed Anas equalised in the 70th minute after Knox Mutizwa opened the scoring in the eighth.

“All that we were chasing [against Polokwane] was to make 26 [points] and then you get four, you are out of the mess [referring to relegation] and then you start working towards 40 for the top-eight,” said Komphela, as quoted by SowetanLIVE.

“We are on 24, we still need two matches to win, then we are guaranteed safety.”

Komphela’s priorities clearly differ from those of Kaizer Chiefs, who are on course to finally win the league title he was unable to deliver, arguably costing him his job.

Last season was their first post-Komphela and they fared worse than they had under him. In 2019-20, Ernst Middendorp has restored Amakhosi’s superiority.

Chiefs lead Mamelodi Sundowns by seven points and have a major opportunity to extend that while Masandawana focus on their CAF Champions League commitments.

Kick-off time and prediction

Kick-off time: 25 January, 15:30

Prediction: This will feel like a home game for Kaizer Chiefs due to their huge support base in Durban. Arrows have not been in ideal form lately and an Amakhosi win is the most likely result.

This analysis is in line with the odds on offer with Chiefs handed a 58% chance of victory and Arrows 24%. The Glamour Boys win 58% of fixtures at these odds and Abafana Bes’thende 31%.
