Gavin Hunt: Pirates can challenge Sundowns, rest are ‘joking’

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has emphatically suggested only Pirates look likely to challenge Sundowns for the league title.

As it stands, perennial DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns are once again at the summit of the league standings, one point ahead of surprise package Richards Bay, who have played one more game. In the chasing, SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are also in the top five, but many believe it’s the Buccaneers who are best placed to challenge the hegemony of Sundowns.

Pirates recruited well in the last transfer window

SuperSport have won four of their last five matches in the DStv Premiership to move to third spot on the log table, but Gavin Hunt has downplayed the championship chances for his club, and in fact stated his belief that only Pirates could be held in such high regard.

“I still don’t think we are close enough… We are just trying to get as many points as we can, but I don’t think we are close. I still think Pirates is the only team that can challenge Sundowns. Pirates are the main challengers, the rest of us are just joking,” Hunt explained.

Earlier this year, SuperSport United revealed why the club opted to hand Gavin Hunt a two-year deal to return and coach the team.

SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews added: “Gavin has a great history with our club and his coaching record speaks for itself with four PSL League titles and domestic cups to his name.

“We have some fantastic young talent in the club that will benefit from Gavin’s vast experience and coaching ability and we look forward to him blending our youth with the experienced players we already have and the couple of new players who will be joining us in the weeks ahead.”

In May last year, Kaizer Chiefs released Hunt from his contract after a string of poor results with the club, although he had led Amakhosi to the semi-final of the CAF Champions League.

After a brief move to Chippa United, Hunt had been without a job for quite some time, but recently said he is keeping his options open, while suggesting he would love to take on a new coaching challenge if the culture was the right fit.
