Hunt, who was sacked late last season as Amakhosi coach after just 10 months in the job, is the only PSL coach to have completed the “double” over Kaizer Chiefs on MORE than one occasion.

The 57-year-old did so while in charge of SuperSport United in the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons.

Several fascinating stats emerged – which you should read below – after Royal AM became the most recent side to complete the “double” over the Glamour Boys when winning last Sunday’s clash 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium.

Earlier in the season, Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize’s side won 4-1 at Amakhosi’s FNB Stadium fortress.

Royal AM became just the 13th side to complete the feat since the PSL era kicked off in South Africa in the 1996/97 season.

Prior to Sunday, the last time a side had beaten Kaizer Chiefs both home and away in the same season was back in 2017/18 when Chippa United managed to do so.

When one considers that there are 15 opportunities every season – and the 2021/22 season is the 26th to date – that’s close on 400 unwanted “doubles” to be avoided for every team.

In 1997/98, Cape Town Spurs won 3-1 and 4-2 in their two matches against Kaizer Chiefs. At the time, the Mother City side featured Bafana Bafana legends Matthew Booth and Shaun Bartlett in their ranks.

Cape Town Spurs’ seven goals in the two matches remain the most for a side completing a double against the Soweto giants.

Two seasons later, another Cape side, Ajax Cape Town, won 2-1 and 1-0 against Kaizer Chiefs in the same campaign. Current Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard played for Ajax back then.

In 2002/03, Golden Arrows became the first side in the 16-team PSL era to win home and away against Kaizer Chiefs.

Golden Arrows won 1-0 and then 2-1.

Mabhuti Khanyeza, who would go on to play for Kaizer Chiefs, was on the Golden Arrows scoresheet.

That same season, Wits won 1-0 at home and then 2-0 away to cap a double-double over Amakhosi.

Pitso Mosimane was the spoil sport the following season as SuperSport United completed the double over the champions-elect. The second of those wins (3-0 at home) came just two weeks before Amakhosi were crowned champions.

That remain the only instance that Kaizer Chiefs have lost home and away to an opponent in a season that they would go on to become champions.

The 2008/09 season was the worst for Kaizer Chiefs in terms of double defeats.

Moroka Swallows, Orlando Pirates and Santos all claimed home and away wins over the Glamour Boys. It remains their worst season in terms of double defeats.

The following season, Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport United won 1-0 and 2-0 against Kaizer Chiefs.

Denis Onyango was the SuperSport United goalkeeper and played in the 1-0 win. Matsatsantsa would later be crowned PSL champions.

Hunt would haunt the Naturena-based side two seasons later, again at the helm of SuperSport United, winning 1-0 and then 2-1 that season, to become the only coach in PSL history to complete a league double over Amakhosi on more than one occasion.

Six weeks later, it was current Royal AM captain Ndumiso Mabena’s turn to score a brace for Platinum Stars against Kaizer Chiefs, as they won 2-0 to register a league double.
