Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu side fought back to hold Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw in their DStv Premiership match at the iconic FNB Stadium on Wednesday night, leaving Usuthu eighth on the table.

The Glamour Boys ‘scored’ the opening goal of the match in the 20th minute thanks to an own goal by Keagan Buchanan to take a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

Kaizer Chiefs were then reduced to 10 men when Cole Alexander was shown a red card for a second bookable offence in the 60th minute.

AmaZulu took advantage of their numerical superiority to finally draw level in the 77th minute thanks to a goal from Bongi Ntuli.

AmaZulu’s Samkelo Mgwazela then received his marching orders in the 85th minute, also following two yellow cards, but Usuthu were able to shut up shop and hold on for the draw.

Benni McCarthy says performances are “becoming ridiculous”

In an interview with SuperSport after the match, a visibly dejected McCarthy said the performance simply didn’t match up to the effort the players produced in training.

“It’s very frustrating and not much you can do. I guess the fact that we didn’t lose the game and go home with an ‘L’ is something. But this is becoming ridiculous. I spoke about restricting the space, and we managed the game well, but we’ve got absolutely nothing. We don’t look like a team that is going to create and win the game, because we are too passive, and then we concede the softest goal and then are chasing the game unnecessarily

For McCarthy, and AmaZulu, it was seventh draw of the season – the most out of any DStv Premiership team.

“When you understand football and work with these guys every day, but then see what they give you on match day, how can I be happy and satisfied with getting a point from a game we should be winning?

“God help us when it comes to next season,” McCarthy added, while admitting he had been caught at a time when he was extremely frustrated and disappointed.
