Orlando Pirates were believed to have wrapped up the signing of a SuperSport United star ahead of next season.

But according to SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt, reports of Kegan Johannes moving to Pirates are wide off the mark.

Pirates as well as arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs were both rumoured to be interested in signing Johannes. This publication reported that it was Chiefs who first put their hand up, showing interest in Johannes. It was not too long then when reports would emerge that Pirates too, were hot on heels. Then in what seemed like an anti-climax, it was then reported that the player would be moving to neither, and had signed a contract renewal at SuperSport.

SuperSport deny Daniels rumours

But then earlier this week, it was reported that Johannes had snubbed Chiefs and was set to move to Pirates. Hunt, however, was quick to dismiss those rumours as reported by this publication on Saturday.

That narrative seems to have taken yet another twist, however! According to KickOff.com, Pirates are indeed closing in on Johannes, but it’s not done yet!

Negotiations with Pirates advanced

“Pirates are thin in the right back position. They are keen to sign Kegan Johannes. The negotiations between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage,” said the source to the publication.

This is an interesting move for Pirates who signed Thabiso Lebitso on a free transfer from Chippa United in January. He was brought in to challenge Bandile Shandu and Thabiso Monyane for the right back berth. Now, Johannes joining the Buccaneers next season makes sense, when you reports keep surfacing, of Shandu’s potential departure.

In Johannes, Pirates would be getting a player who can cover both right back and his original position of centre-back. It now remains to be seen if the player has truly signed for the Sea Robbers and when he will be announced.
