Former Orlando Pirates star set to join Percy Tau in Egypt

Zambia international striker Justin Shonga is currently undergoing trials with Egyptian Premier League outfit Ismaily.

Zambia international striker Justin Shonga is currently undergoing trials with Egyptian Premier League outfit Ismaily.

Shonga rose to prominence in 2017 when he moved from Nkwazi FC in Zambia to Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

He scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists in 77 appearances for the Buccaneers between 2017 and 2020 and helped guide them to back-to-back second-place finishes in the league.

In October 2020 he moved to Marumo Gallants where he stayed for just three months before signing a six-month contract with Cape Town City FC.

After his contract ended for the Citizens in July this year, Shonga became a free agent, but now it appears he’s closing in on a move to the Egyptian Premier League.

According to several reports out of Egypt, Shonga is currently undergoing a trial period at Ismaily at their Alexandria training camp.

The Yellows are in desperate need of a new striker following the departure of Fakhreddine Ben Youssef to Pyramids FC.

Shonga was on the cusp of a move to Egypt last year when he started negotiations with reigning Egyptian champions Zamalek, but nothing materialised.

Shonga, still only 24, also has 19 caps for Zambia in which he has scored six goals.

His last appearance for Chipolopolo came in November of last year.

Ismaily finished 13th in the 18-team Egyptian Premier League standings last season.
