The January transfer window offers clubs in the DStv Premiership an opportunity to reinforce their ranks but some clubs don’t get involved in the spending.

According to football agent Kieran Brown, PSL clubs spend less in January for a variety of reasons.

Why are PSL clubs less active in the January transfer window

Firstly, Brown points out that the current window takes place with the business side of football in a slump due to the pandemic.

Kept afloat by TV Money, PSL clubs have not been able to open their doors to fans since early 2020.

Brown also suggests that less moves take place because there are less free agents around, and those who are available have often not been playing any football.

Finally Brown says that many clubs in the PSL might simply be happy with the squads they have assembled for the season.

“There has been a significant loss of revenue by football clubs in South Africa and globally due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Brown tells KickOff.

“Which of course does not help when you are looking to improve on current squads.

“Players are typically more expensive in the January transfer window, and there are fewer free players to choose from.

“The last factor simply could be that a majority of the head coaches and owners are content with their current squads.

“Which would indicate to me that the clubs had a successful summer window. This should be seen as a positive by the fans and players.”

Business not booming

Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United have so far dipped into the transfer market.

Amazulu have declared their intent to make enquiries for players but their top brass are skeptical of bagging new recruits in the window.

A reluctance to do business on the part of other club’s is often the biggest stumbling block at this stage of the season.

We could also see a number of deals done that will be revealed later, with players entering the last six months of their contracts in January.
